Compare Fire HD 7 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 4
See for yourself why Fire HD 7 is the clear winner

Design

Aesthetically, the Fire HD 7 doesn't break the mold; chunky bezels thickly frame the sharp 7-inch screen and the angular design looks similar to the Fire HDX line. Yet, the materials that construct the tablet give it a cheap toy-like feel.

The thin plastic back panel makes the tablet feel hollow, the way removable back covers do, and its smooth texture provides little grip support -- though the angular design helps fingertips securely wrap around the edges of the tablet. Indeed it's still comfy to hold and portable, but I was disappointed in the rinky-dink plastic design -- despite the five fun colors it comes in.
The buttons on the Fire HD feature a more traditional placement and design in comparison to the concave controls on the Fire HDX tablets; the rectangular buttons slightly protrude from the top edge and right corner, instead of the left and right edges. The headphone jack, microphone pinhole, and micro-USB port can also be found on the top edge, while the back of the bottom is home to the solitary mono speaker.

Amazon offers the tablet in a Kids Edition, which ships with a protective case and a two-year replacement plan. The tablet itself is simply the Fire HD 7 with the added bonus of a FreeTime Unlimited subscription. The service, free for a year, features curated kid-friendly apps, games and videos. Packaged into an interface children can easily navigate themselves, FreeTime also works as an extensive parental control function that can set a schedule or time limits for tablet use. The extras will cost you, at $189 for the 8GB model 7-inch model in the US; availability in the UK and Australia have yet to be announced for the Kids Edition, but that price converts to around £120 or AU$215.

Pass the Sangria

Amazon's latest operating system, Fire OS 4 Sangria, isn't much different than last year's Mojito, but it adds a few features to make sharing the tablet with family members simpler and extending the battery life easier. The Fire HD line lacks a few of the software perks that can be found on the HDX tablets, like the instant customer service feature Mayday, but the majority of features on the high-end line can be found on the Fire HD 7, too.
Amazon recently introduced its FreeTime service, which helps parents manage how and when their children use the tablet, and the addition of user profile options help parents take that control a step further. With the Sangria OS, you can create individual user profiles for adults and children, so instead of going into the settings menu to turn on the kid-friendly tablet mode, you simply create a separate profile for your child. Android tablets have long had a similar feature, but Amazon's function is geared toward making the Fire tablets more sharable among families. Soon there will be an update to allow sharing content from one Amazon account across multiple Fire devices, but it has yet to roll out.

A great upgrade for me from an older Kindle Fire!

Color Name:Black| Configuration:With Special Offers| Digital Storage Capacity:16|Verified Purchase
Length: 9:50 Mins
I purchased the original Kindle Fire in 2011 and the second generation Kindle Fire in 2012. I gave my original one to my grandson and he is still using it for apps and reading. I liked both of them and I have to tell you that they have held up very well. One is over 3 years old and the other is 2 years old and I have not had any issues with them. Since I have not upgraded in 2 years I thought I would get a new one with a larger memory and a faster CPU and a higher resolution display. There are many improvements beyond even those features.

I have to tell you that overall I am impressed with this new one. I didn't feel the need to purchase a Kindle Fire every year and when I purchased the next one I wanted it to be a definite upgrade step to what I had. I stayed with the 7 inch size as I like to portability and weight for long term reading. I alternate between the Kindle Paperwhite for reading in the daytime and at night sometimes and I use the Kindle Fire for reading in the evening and at night plus browsing the internet and getting email. This new Kindle Fire HD 2014 version is very fast and easy to use. Setting it up for the internet and downloading my apps and books was a breeze. I like the fact that the larger memory allows me to carry more apps and books. The higher resolution of the screen is helpful in reading books as the text is clearer and easier on my eyes than the older Kindle Fires we own. The screen is better for playing apps and watching videos and movies and it is worth the upgrade from the older Kindle Fires.

 Great Buy

The Fire was so easy to use and the color screen is absolutely wonderful. The images are crystal clear and it is so easy to access my books. Also bought a Kindle reader initially, about 3 years ago which I loved at the time. Downloading my books from my Kindle to my Fire was so easy. Getting on the internet to access news, music and games is straightforward and with little hassle. I just love this device.

Even grandma has it figured out! October 3, 2014
I purchased this Kindle for my grandma, because I wanted a simple way to video chat with her. Our old process was pretty complicated: First, she had to turn her computer on, sign into Skype, call me to let me know that she would like to Skype and that she was online, then answer my incomming request. Since she is retired and has lots of time, this was okay for her, but didn't work well for me, since I was often unavailable when she wanted to Skype.

She now has a Kindle that she keeps in the living room, and I can send her a skype request directly to the device. This works great for me, because she's always online, which means we can video chat during my breaks at work. I recently moved to Utah, and broke grandma's heart, but she feels closer to me now that we can see eachother face to face.

In addition to how easy it was to get this setup (which I walked her through over the phone), she has fallen in love with the games she now has access to. If my 80 year old grandma can figure this out, then I think most people will find it pretty simple to use.

Pros:
-Easy to setup (even for an 80 year old)
-Functional layout and design
-Syncs with Amazon Account for and easy way to purcahse apps. I can purchase an app for my grandma from my computer, and it will show up right on her Kindle.
-Unlimited cloud storage for photos (my grandma is no longer afraid she is going to lose precious pictures of her kids)
-Bright screen and great for reading

Cons:
Limited storage space (16gb is great for most people, but will fill up fast if you take a lot of video)

***Update: I updated my review. I ordered this for my grandma who told me that there was no power adapter included. Turns out she left it in the box. So far so good.
